Essential Oil of the Month: Carrot Seed!

Essential oils are the oils from the plants they were extracted from in concentrated form. Essential oils have been used in skincare, folk and alternative medicine, aromatherapy, cosmetics, soaps, perfumes, foods and drinks for centuries.

Carrot Seed Oil is derived from Daucus carota (also known as wild carrot, (UK) bird’s nest, bishop’s lace, and (US) Queen Anne’s lace)  it can be found in North America, Europe, Australia, and Southwest Asia.  It is excellent for dry and mature skin. The oil’s high carotol content gives it its skin-rejuvenation properties.   Studies have shown that it has anti fungal, anti septic, anti viral, disinfectant, herbicidal and insecticidal properties due to a biological marvel called an allelochemical reaction.  By which an organism produces one or more biochemicals that influence the growth, survival, and reproduction of other organisms. These biochemicals can have positive or negative  effects on the target organisms.  It can be added to nearly any skin care blend to enhance its effectiveness.  It has an antioxidant,  Carrot seed is also said to rejuvenate the energy of the solar plexus, and to be relieving of fatigue.

Essential Oil should not be applied directly to the skin but in carrier oils, putting the oils directly on the skin is too harsh due to their concentrated form. Add a few drops of carrot seed essential oil to the carrier oil and massage into the face or specific area. Remove excess oil with a toner specific to your skin type or condition with a cotton pad.

If you are pregnant, receiving cancer treatment, or have a weakened immune system the use of essential oils is not recommended!

While essential oil will not go rancid, carrier oils can. Store your carrier oils in a cool, dry, and dark place.
