Sometimes it’s the little things that make the big changes to your skin!

Are you constantly on the phone just like me?

How often do you change your sheets, pillow case, towels, wash cloth?

Do you wash your hands after you eat?

Do you sleep with your hair up or down?

Do you sleep on your side?

Do you wash your eyeglasses at least every day?

Do you use a humidifier in the dry winter months?

So many questions! What do they all have in common?  The answer?  They can all affect the skin.

In this day and age we are constantly on the phone. We have the phone up to our faces, touch our phones all the time with hands that might not be the cleanest, and even take them to less than sanitary places like the bathroom to text. Now think about all the places and times you have used your phone and not cleaned it. Yet you are putting the phone against your face. Yuck!  Cleaning your phone with wipes can help your skin by cleaning off germs, bacteria, oil, and grime.

It is important to change your sheets, pillowcases, towels, and wash clothes once to twice a week; more frequently if you have oily skin or acne. You are transferring oil, sweat, grime, et cetera, to your linens. You need to wash your linens so that you aren’t laying your face in the oil, sweat and grime and causing yourself to break out.  Not only should you frequently wash your wash cloth, you should also make sure that it is wrung out thoroughly and laid to dry out overnight.  Wash cloths are a breeding ground for bacteria.  Leaving them moist accelerates the bacterial growth.

Do you wash you hands after eating?  We touch our faces an average of 16 times an hour. I know you think, “Okay, I really need to wash my hands after eating fried chicken.”  Look at the labels of your food.   Would you want any of that residue on your face?

Do you wear your hair up in a loose ponytail or a soft headband away from your face when you sleep? Do you wear it down loose?  Do you wear products in your hair? Is your hair oily? Your hair is always touching your face unless it is extremely short.  If you have long hair, try wearing it back with a scrunchy or headband at night. Check the labels of your styling products.  All these things can affect your skin.

Do you sleep on your side? Try sleeping on your back so that your face isn’t pressed up against the pillowcase.  Sleeping on your side or stomach can cause you to prematurely wrinkle by causing sleep lines on your cheeks, chin, and forehead.

Make sure to clean your nose pads on your glasses.  Your nose can be a very oily place.

All skin types can benefit from a humidifier in the winter months when the humidity is low.  32-35% humidity is ideal, although as long as you stay in the 27-45% humidity range it is fine. Any lower or higher can cause skin problems in the long term.  Low humidity causes dry, tight, and itchy skin. While high humidity causes sweating and your skin to swell.  Make sure you clean your humidifier once a week with a water/vinegar solution.  However if you live in a very humid environment you may wish to purchase a dehumidifier to lower the humidity.

Yes. Troubled skin can be caused by many things.  Some are obvious.  Some less so.  Sometimes we need to look at our habits to help our skin along.
