The purpose of the study above was to measure sun protection factor (SPF) of herbal oils that are commonly used in sunscreen formulations using a proposed technique. So the study really can’t be used as evidence of its effectiveness as a sunscreen. If the measured values are accurate then it is plausible that coconut oil could be used as an extremely light sun screen with appropriate usage. However, it should be noted that the measured SPF of 7.119 of coconut oil is significantly below the dermatologist recommended SPF 15 or greater. I prefer at least a SPF of 30 that is listed as full or Broad spectrum.


Red raspberry seed oil is said to have an SPF of 28 to 50 and a long shelf life, but it doesn’t appear to have gone through extensive testing to determine whether it’s okay to use it alone as your sunscreen yet. In one study on herbal oils used in cosmetics, scientists found that the SPF range varied from one to eight for the oils tested, with olive oil and coconut oil being the highest of the fixed oils (around eight) and peppermint oil and tulsi oil the highest of the essential oils tested (around seven). Sunscreens are classified as drugs meaning that the active ingredients are on the approved list and have been thoroughly researched and gone through trials to test effectiveness. True because red raspberry seed oil is an expensive ingredient and there are much cheaper options out there companies aren’t going to shell out the big bucks to have the oil properly researched to become an “active” ingredients, so we never know. The internet sites that state the spf of red raspberry seed oil are all based on one study done in 2000. This is only one study and many more studies need to be done before a consensus can be reached.



Even with these types of findings, scientists seem hesitant to recommend using natural oils alone as sunscreen and I agree the proof is in the pudding! Though some oils provide protection it is not nearly enough to protect you from UVA or UVB rays nor do we know how the long after applied they are effective.  Do they breakdown with sun exposure and if yes how and at what rate? How easily do we wash or sweat them off?  How much do we need to apply due to absorption into the skin?

Only using the oils isn’t in my opinion the best idea there’s conflicting information about exactly how much sun protection you’ll actually get, and most reports don’t list a high enough SPF to do much good. The AAD-recommendation for protecting our skin is with a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB), SPF 30 (blocking 97% of UV rays) product. Antioxidants, like those found in many of the oils, will help protect you against the free radicals that come with UV radiation. The free radical theory of aging (FRTA) states that organisms age because cells accumulate free radical damage over time. For most biological structures, free radical damage is closely associated with oxidative damage. Antioxidants are reducing agents, and limit oxidative damage to biological structures. They could give those natural sunscreens a boost when used in conjunction with them if you check labels many already include them in the formulations.


A study in Carcinogenesis compared a control group of hairless mice to mice that were pretreated with olive oil prior to UVB exposure and mice that had olive oil applied after sun exposure. At first, there was a notable difference in tumor growth between the control group and the mice that were pretreated, but over time, that difference decreased. Where the difference was sustained, however, was in the mice that were treated with olive oil after the UVB exposure.


In a separate study, researchers tested the effects of using a combination of antioxidants C and E to pigs’ skin. They also tested vitamins E and C separately and found the combination to be superior in offering sun protection, though E and C did offer some sun protection hen used separately. It makes sense to believe that antioxidants found in oils could offer a similar effect for us.


There are many organic and vegan sunblocks out there! 

If chemical sunblocks make you uneasy look for physical sunblocks that contain: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) or Zinc oxide (ZnO)!

The Sleep Cycle

Characterized by two states—REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM.

Non-REM sleep has three stages, ranging from drowsiness to deep sleep.

  • Stage 1 – occurs mostly in the beginning of sleep, with slow eye movement. Alpha waves disappear and the theta wave appears. People aroused from this stage often believe that they have been fully awake.
  • Stage 2 – no eye movement occurs, and dreaming is very rare. The sleeper is easily awakened.
  • Stage 3 –  is deep sleep, slow-wave sleep (SWS).  Dreaming is more common in this stage than in other stages of NREM sleep though not as common as in REM sleep. The content of SWS dreams tends to be disconnected, less vivid, and less memorable than those that occur during REM sleep. is made up of the deepest stage of NREM, and is often referred to as deep sleep.

REM sleep (classified into two categories: tonic and phasic) is where dreams occur, breathing and heart rate increase and become irregular, muscles relax and the eyes move back and forth. Criteria for REM sleep includes rapid eye movement, low muscle tone and a rapid, low-voltage EEG.

REM sleep typically occupies 20–25% of total sleep, about 90–120 minutes of a night’s sleep. REM sleep normally occurs close to morning. During a night of sleep, one usually experiences about four or five periods of REM sleep; they are quite short at the beginning of the night and longer toward the end. Many animals and some people tend to wake, or experience a period of very light sleep, for a short time immediately after a bout of REM. The relative amount of REM sleep varies considerably with age. A newborn baby spends more than 80% of total sleep time in REM. During REM, the activity of the brain’s neurons is quite similar to that during waking hours; for this reason, the REM-sleep stage may be called paradoxical sleep.

REM sleep is physiologically different from the other phases of sleep, which are collectively referred to as non-REM sleep (NREM sleep). Subjects’ vividly recalled dreams mostly occur during REM sleep.

Not only does sleep loss appear to stimulate appetite. It also stimulates cravings for high-fat, high-carbohydrate foods.

  • Decreased ability to heal especially from sun damage

What is it?

Hyaluronan (also called hyaluronic acid or hyaluronate or HA) is an anionic, nonsulfated glycosaminoglycan distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. It is unique among glycosaminoglycans in that it is nonsulfated, forms in the plasma membrane instead of the Golgi, and can be very large, with its molecular weight often reaching the millions. Foods high in retinol, a component of vitamin A, will contain high amounts of hyaluronic acid, according to a 2008 study conducted by Gary J. Fischer, PhD (Professor of Dermatology) of the University of Michigan Health Systems. The study, cited in the Archives of Dermatology, claims that a cross-linked blend of hyaluronic and retonic acid is beneficial to skin healing and collagen regeneration due to their vitamin A antioxidant properties.

Veal, lamb, beef, turkey, goose, duck and turkey are all rich sources. It has been suggested the free-radical scavenging property of Hyaluronic Acid contributes to protection against solar radiation. High concentrations of hyaluronan in the brains of young rats, and reduced concentrations in the brains of adult rats suggest hyaluronan plays an important role in brain development.

How much does my body have?

The average 70 kg (154 lb) person has roughly 15 grams of hyaluronan in the body, one-third of which is turned over (degraded and synthesized).


Hyaluronan has been used in attempts to treat osteoarthritis of the knee via injecting it into the joint.

Dry, scaly skin (xerosis) such as that caused by atopic dermatitis (eczema) may be treated with a prescription skin lotion containing sodium hyaluronate as its active ingredient.

Hyaluronan may also be used postoperatively to induce tissue healing, notably after cataract surgery. Current models of wound healing propose the larger polymers of hyaluronic acid appear in the early stages of healing to physically make room for white blood cells, which mediate the immune response.

Hyaluronan has also been used in the synthesis of biological scaffolds for wound-healing applications. These scaffolds typically have proteins such as fibronectin attached to the hyaluronan to facilitate cell migration into the wound. This is particularly important for individuals with diabetes suffering from chronic wounds.

Eye surgeons use hyaluronic acid to supplement natural fluids during surgeries, including corneal transplants, cataract removal, retina repair and other procedures.

Cosmetic surgeons use hyaluronic acid as fillers in various plastic surgical procedures. Scientists at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland report more than 85 percent of dermal filler procedures involve the use of hyaluronic acid, according to research published in “Facial Plastic Surgery” in May 2009.

You can also use hyaluronic acid to moisturize the skin and help heal burns, wounds and ulcers it is found in many skin care products.
