Health & Beauty Tech I’m into Now!

Northern Light Technology Flamingo Lux Bright Light Therapy Floor Lamp

Why I like it:

Most S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) lamps are small desktop lights that have to be positioned just right to be effective. This floor lamp is much more versatile; it stands 4 feet tall fully assembled with a rotating head which allows you to angle the light for maximum comfort. Electronically powered ballast assures reliable performance with no flicker and no hum. Offers 10,000 lux at Full Spectrum Lighting a comfortable distance of 12 inches, UV blocked. Made in Canada following strict CSA safety guidelines, Canadian Standards Association. I put it together myself in under 5 minutes.

Oral-B BLACK 7000 SmartSeries Power Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush with Bluetooth Connectivity Powered by Braun

Why I Like it:

It talks to your phone using Bluetooth giving you real-time feedback with the Oral-B app focuses brushing on your most important areas, tracks habits over time, motivates with helpful oral care tips, and senses when you brush too hard! Cross Action round brush head with perfectly angled bristles for a precise clean; though my favorite brush that comes with it is the whitening brush. I feel like I just came from a dental check up. Clinically proven superior 3D cleaning oscillates, rotates and pulsates to break up and remove up to 100% more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush.

Rechargeable with 6 modes: Daily Clean, Gum Care, Sensitive, Whitening, Deep Clean, and Tongue Cleaner.

Reminds you to floss and use mouthwash. Keeps a calendar on how long and how many times a day you brush. And more….

I’m lazy when it comes to dental care. The least amount of work the better! So I love to be told by the brush what to do to motive me!

Clarisonic Smart Profile Cleansing Brush

Why I Like it:

Just when I thought Clarisonic couldn’t get better, it did!!! It got intuitive! SMART technology enables the Smart Profile device to read the two new smart enabled brush heads and to automatically adjust between gentle and deep cleansing for an optimal head-to-toe experience. Brush Head replacement indicator illuminates to prompt you when it is time to replace the brush head. Speed auto-adjusts! Amplified turbo speed removes makeup 11x BETTER than hands alone delivering superior cleansing results. You can use 4 manual speeds as well!

DAFNI Hair Straightening Ceramic Brush

Why I Like it:

Heating to a safe 185°C/365°F in mere seconds, this tool evenly distributes heat without damaging your tresses in the process and you control the level of volume. Plus, it’s simple to use, no clips or fuss, you simply brush your hair! I love that it saves time! The bristles glide through your hair without tugging or pulling, creating straight, frizz-free strands fast.

Tricks For Better Hair Color Before and After!

Before Getting Your Hair Colored:

  • Don’t wash your hair for 12 – 24 hours before getting your hair colored your natural oils from your scalp protect your scalp from irritation and color holds better to dirty hair when applied (clean hair is slippery and harder for the color to cling to)
  • Try Malibu Color Prepare Treatment
  • Going dark is gentler on your hair than going lighter
  • A keratin treatment in your hair should be done right around the time that you color your strands to seal in the color
  • Multidimensional color can trick the eye into thinking there’s more volume
  • Drugs may affect hair’s receptivity to dye (ex.thyroid medications, chemotherapy, and some types of hormonal medications)
  • Healthy hair holds on to color best: dry or damaged can fade quickly, finer hair lightens faster and coarser hair is more color-resistant

After Care:

  • Don’t wash your hair for at least 3 days to give the cuticle layer time to fully close trapping the color molecule
  • Deep condition once you wash your hair the first time after your hair is colored and then once to twice a week after for maintenance – exception to this rule is if your hair is bleached
  • Use a shampoo and conditioner formulated for colored hair
  • The more you wash your hair the quicker your color will fade, try using a dry shampoo to extend your hair style between washes
  • Use a UV Hair Protection Product everyday to keep color from fading (like Klorane Mango Oil)
  • If your hair turns green or brassy, wash with a purple-tinted shampoo once a week (like Clairol Shimmer Lights)
  • And prevent future damage by coating hair in conditioner before you go to the beach or pool
  • Volumizers can fade hair color quicker
  • Well water or water that has a high rust content (both of which can deposit minerals that make highlights look brassy), install a shower filter or use a treatment that is specific for well water to remove the minerals
  • Use a heat protecting product on your hair if you are using any hot tools on your hair and don’t use the tools on wet hair other than a blow dryer

Do You Really Know How to Shampoo & Condition Your Hair?

I’m sure you are thinking,

“I know how to wash my own hair, I’ve been doing it since I was a child.”

Experts say that many hair problems occur because people don’t know how to wash their hair properly.

An estimated one in three people don’t use a shower attachment to wet and rinse their hair, relying instead on dunking it under the bathwater or pouring over a few jugs of water. To work effectively, most modern haircare formulations need plenty of water to remove the dirt and release the conditioning agents.

How often should you wash your hair?

Advice differs between daily and twice a week. The sensible solution is that if it’s looking good, don’t change your routine. If it isn’t and you are washing it every three days or so, try washing it daily in a gentle shampoo and always follow with a suitable conditioner. If you wash it every day and are disappointed, first of all try different products, then less frequent washing, starting with alternate days.

Many people believe their hair gets used to one product and will benefit from frequent changes. This is, in fact, true, says trichologist and biochemist Dr Hugh Rushton (is a pioneer in the treatment of hair loss)– particularly with some of the newer polymer volumising products. So do switch every once and a while.

How to wash your hair

  • Wet hair in the warmest water your scalp can stand. Run your fingers threw your hair to allow the water to touch your scalp.
  • Apply about a teaspoon of shampoo – less for short hair, more for really long. Using more shampoo than you need won’t result in cleaner hair. Always apply from the palm of your hand, so you can judge the amount. In soft water areas, or if you have a water softener, you won’t need so much.
  • Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails, to massage shampoo into the scalp, then work through to the ends of the hair – massaging, rather than rubbing, to avoid tangles.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Repeat the whole process if you don’t wash it daily.
  • Squeeze out the extra moisture with your hands before you apply conditioner. Massage conditioner onto your hair (especially the ends, not your scalp) and leave on for the recommended time. Comb conditioner threw with a wide tooth comb.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Blot hair dry with a towel – don’t rub or wring hair as it is at its weakest when wet. Use a second towel to wrap around your hair; leave it on for a few minutes to absorb excess moisture.

Indigo: An Ancient Skincare Ingredient Given New Life!

Geisha have been in the know using soothing, calming, and healing ingredient Indigo for centuries!

This is the color that is called indigo in the Japanese traditional colors, a group of colors in use since beginning in 660 CE in the form of various dyes that are used in designing kimonos.  The name of this color in Japanese is ai-iro, which means indigo color.  In fact, during the Edo Period, the Samurai warriors wore a layer of indigo-dyed cotton beneath their armor to help skin wounds heal, earning the color the nickname “Samurai Blue.”

It is also widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for Psoriasis!

I know when you think of indigo you think of the rainbow, visible color spectrum (ROY G. BIV -Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Indigo and Violet) or demin jeans (the dye used to color jeans comes from indigo!)  Denim is a tone of indigo Crayola which resembles the shade of indigo used in denim. Crayola created this color in 1993 as one of the new 16 colors.

Get Real Denim Suds Soap

India is believed to be the oldest center of indigo dyeing in the Old World. It was a primary supplier of indigodye, derived from the plant Indigofera tinctoria, to Europe as early as the Greco-Roman era. The association of India with indigo is reflected in the Greek word for the ‘dye’, which was indikon (ινδικόν). The Romans used the term indicum, which passed into Italian dialect and eventually into English as the word indigo. The country of El Salvador has lately been the biggest producer of indigo.  The same indigo dye is contained in the woad plant, Isatis tinctoria, for a long time the main source of blue dye in Europe. Woad was replaced by true indigo as trade routes opened up, and both are now largely replaced by synthetic dyes.

Keep your Hair and Skin Healthy with a Shower Water Filter!

I have tried several shower water filters over the years and nothing has worked as well as Aquasana.  Why a water filter in the shower?  City water has chlorine, traces of synthetic chemicals, a high acid or low alkaline PH.  Well water can have an excess of  iron, calcium, and magnesium.  Aquasana removes 91% of the chlorine in your water, compared to 50% for other water filters, and also reduces synthetic chemicals and enhances pH balance.  They have shower filters specifically made for well water, but you need to call (866) 662-6885 to order it is not for sale on the website.  I was able to install it like any other shower head no plumber needed.  The filter contain two stages.  Stage one copper-zinc oxidation media reduces chlorine and enhances pH balance and stage two coconut shell carbon to reduce synthetic chemicals.   The filters need to be replaced about every six months and cost $52.50.  That may sound like a lot of money but if you constantly have dry, itchy skin and dandruff it can make a difference.  Also remember that your skin is absorbing the contaminants in the water.  You wouldn’t want to drink that, why would you want to shower in it?
