Cucumber-Melon Spa Water Recipe!

Rejuvenate and refresh without stepping foot inside a spa. This recipe for Cucumber Melon Spa Water from chef and author Candice Kumai is a hydrating treat.

Cucumber Melon Spa Water

Ingredients:
12 thin slices cucumber ** unwaxed cucumber-organic is perfect
5 -1″ cubes of honeydew melon, skin removed
1 bunch mint, torn off, and tossed into the water
6 cups chilled still spring (or mineral water for a fizzy treat)
** Add in fresh basil, or even lavender, orange slices or even some simple syrup for an even sweeter treat!

Directions:
1. Place the cucumber, the peeled honeydew melon, and a handful of fresh mint into your pitcher

2. Fill pitcher with water. Cover and chill for a few hours before guests arrive.

3. You have the option to strain the mixture and discard solids, or use the infused spa water as a visual treat, and have a strainer on the spout/lid. Pour water into gorgeous, tall, clear glasses, with big ice cubes for a real refreshing treat, add more mint and even a few thin slices of cucumber on the brim of the glass for garnish. Fancy!

8 Tips for Gorgeous Skin WITHOUT Expensive Products!

Ah, skin. And the things we do to our skin! Women (especially) are forever in search of the best fix to give them glowing, clear, healthy, wrinkle-free skin. I was inspired to write this topic today because a friend/client came over recently for lunch and she simply has among the most luminescent skin I’ve ever seen- without makeup! But most of us are not so lucky. It got me thinking how most all of us (most definitely including me!) have to put out a real effort to make our skin look good. Still, many of the products and procedures available on today’s market leave me shaking my head – both at the product and the price tag.

Still, I understand the desire to look youthful and beautiful with glowing, clear, firm skin. What woman doesn’t want that? The good news is you don’t have to fork out the cash for expensive products and fillers to look your best. Glowing skin is within your reach, and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

1. Detoxify:

Your skin is a reflection of your overall health. It is the body’s largest organ, and it is an elimination organ. Toxins inside your body can make the skin on the outside of your body look less than beautiful. When you eat foods with toxic ingredients, it is naturally reflected in your skin. The Beauty Detox Solution creates health and beauty because it has a strong element of detoxification to it. When you detoxify your body, the results show on your skin. Detoxification is an ongoing process – though periodic cleanses, properly designed and conducted (like my Glow Bio cleanses), can help launch you into a healthier long-term lifestyle. To detoxify:

We’ve all heard the adage, you are what you eat. While this is true throughout your body, it is especially visible on your skin. Eating toxic, chemical-laden foods can show up on your skin, leaving it dull, dry and flaky. Poor nutrition can also speed up wrinkling and cause breakouts.

Nourishing your skin begins from the inside with the foods you eat. Because the skin is an organ, it requires nutrients to maintain vibrant health.

  • Stick to whole, plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds
  • Eat a variety of produce from across the full spectrum of color
  • Eliminate common allergens such as wheat, soy, dairy products, and peanuts
  • Minimize or eliminate animal protein. If you do eat animal protein, choose organic, naturally raised, and pastured meats like free-range organic poultry
  • Eat plant foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as chia seeds, walnuts and green veggies
  • Start each day with a Glowing Green Smoothie
  • Eliminate refined sugars

3. Cleanse:

Keeping your skin clean is also important. Many people use harsh cleansers that can actually strip the skin of important hydration and leave it dull. Use a mild cleanser. Because I have oily skin and used to battle acne, I used to think I needed a stronger cleanser. But now I’ve been using and love the Tamanu Organic Luxury Cleanser by Sally B’s Skin Yummies.  It cleans my face really well, but doesn’t strip it.  It works for all skin types. I don’t recommend using very drying cleansers or regular soaps on your face.

4. Exfoliate:

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells on the surface of your skin that can cause dullness. You don’t need to buy expensive products or use harsh chemical exfoliators, however. You probably have a natural skin exfoliation agent right now in your kitchen: oatmeal. Oatmeal both soothes and exfoliates. To make an oatmeal exfoliation mask, mix ¾ cups of ground oat groats (grind them in the food processor) or steel cut oatmeal with 1/3 cup of warm water and spread it on your skin. Allow it to dry, and then rinse off with warm water. Another great natural exfoliator for the skin is raw organic apple cider vinegar. It contains alpha-hydroxy acids and can also balance the skin’s pH. To use, mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water and apply it to your skin with a cotton ball. Sit for five minutes before rinsing with warm water.

5. Hydrate:

Hydration is important for glowing, healthy skin. 

  • Drink plenty of pure water throughout the day
  • Drink 16-32+ ounces of Glowing Green Smoothie, which is really hydrating and has a lot of enzymes and nutrients from the fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat a lot of raw foods that contain their own water, like salads containing lots of brightly colored vegetables.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which are dehydrating.
  • Take in extra fluids on hot days, when you are ill or stressed, and when you exercise vigorously.

6. Protect:

Sunlight is important because it supplies valuable vitamin D. To that end, you do need to get about 10 minutes of sunlight each day on unprotected skin in order to allow your body to synthesize vitamin D. Too much sunlight, however, can be harmful, just like anything in excess. Practice healthy sun habits, such as covering up and wearing a hat.

7. Improve circulation:

Keeping your blood flowing and promoting lymph drainage can help keep your skin glowing! Dry brushing is a technique that improves circulation and promotes lymph draining. To practice dry brushing:

  • Use a soft, natural bristled brush.
  • Dry brush before your shower every morning.
  • Use a light pressure as you brush.
  • Starting at your feet, brush in small movements up towards your heart.
  • When you are done, take a shower.

8. Minimize makeup:

One of the benefits of healthy skin is not having to wear a lot of makeup. I don’t wear it all the time, but I do love my favorite products, like the stick Vapour blush in Courtesan. It’s natural and non-toxic, and a little bit in the apple of your cheeks can really brighten your whole face. It’s doesn’t make you break out – I’ve even worn it to sweaty yoga class in the middle of an afternoon and I don’t break out. A lot of makeup brands contain toxins and chemicals that can clog skin, even so-called mineral brands. So choose your products judiciously.

Ways to Get Rid of Acne Through Your Habits!

Acne can be the bane of your existence. It’s just the worst, isn’t it? Even when it’s mild, it can keep you from looking and feeling your best, that’s for sure. I’ve had my own struggles with acne in the past, something I discuss in The Beauty Detox Solution. Improving your diet can definitely help a lot, as your skin is an eliminative organ that helps dispel toxins. Let’s start from the beginning though in our discussion…

What Is Acne?

Acne is a skin inflammation that can manifest as anything from small, red bumps to large, pus filled cysts. This inflammation occurs when the pores become blocked and the body responds with inflammation.

Causes

There are a number of myths about acne. The most common myth is that having dirty skin is the cause. It isn’t. Actually, scrubbing dirt into the skin may exacerbate the condition. Eating chocolate may not necessary directly cause it…but a high fat diet and dairy can definitely contribute to the condition. A number of factors may be at play with creating acne. These include:

  • Hormones: Hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, menstruation, and others can cause enlargement of the sebaceous glands, which then produce more sebum. The result is clogged pores and acne.
  • Diet: Many dietary factors may contribute to acne. High fat foods, and foods that cause inflammation or result in increases in blood sugar can trigger an eruption.
  • Toxicity: Toxic chemicals in the foods you eat, water you drink, and air you breathe can also cause blocked pores. Likewise, as you begin to cleanse your body of toxic chemicals you may notice a short outbreak of acne as these toxins work their way out of your body via your skin.
  • Stress: Studies show stress increases sebum production, which can result in acne.
  • Medications: Medications can contribute to acne in two ways. First, they increase toxicity in your body. Second, many medications affect the acne-related hormones such as androgens.
  • Poor self confidence. On an energetic, mind-body connection level,poor self esteem, talking down to yourself, or repressed anger can all manifest in the physical form of acne.

 Are Popular Acne Treatments Healthy?

 Conventional acne treatment typically involves one of two chemicals: benzoyl peroxide or Accutane.

Accutane is an oral prescription medication. While it has demonstrated tremendous success at treating a specific type of acne (nodular acne), it also has a number of extremely dangerous side effects that make it NOT worth the cost of clear skin. These super scary side effects include:

  • Birth defects and fetal death
  • Premature births
  • Mental health problems including suicidal ideation, depression, and psychosis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Liver damage
  • Allergic reactions
  • Thinning of hair
  • Headaches
  • Brittle nails
  • Muscle pain and fatigue
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Photosensitivity

Benzoyl peroxide is a topical acne fighting ingredient found in both prescription and over-the-counter acne treatments. It produces free radicals in the skin, which can cause premature aging and are linked to a number of diseases including cancer. You don’t want to trade in zits for wrinkles. Benzoyl peroxide also causes extreme drying in the skin, which can lead to flaking, redness, and irritation.

Plus, topical treatments like this don’t get to the root cause of the acne.

Oust the Acne

The best and safest way to eradicate acne is with a healthy diet and lifestyle, as well as use of natural skincare products that leave your skin clean without chemicals. This allows you to fight acne naturally, without the use of harsh or dangerous chemicals and medications. Here are my recommendations.

  1. Get plenty of sleep. Sleep fights stress and helps your body and hormonal systems function normally. Try for 7 to 8 hours each night.
  2. East mostly organic plants. These foods are anti-inflammatory powerhouses that minimize toxic buildup in your system, fight free radicals, and promote health and well-being. If you do eat animal protein, minimize your intake to once or twice per week of lean organic poultry or eggs (fish is full of mercury, PCBs and other toxins).
  3. Minimize processed foods. These foods contain chemicals and ingredients that contribute to toxicity and inflammation – both culprits in acne breakouts.
  4. Skip the dairy. A paper in Clinics in Dermatology discussed the link between hormones in dairy products and acne in humans.
  5. Eat a low-fat diet. Excessive fat is congestive in any form. Do not overdo so-called “good” fats like olive oil. I barely use any oil myself anymore, and cook with mostly vegetable broth. As I noted in the beginning of this blog, excessive fat in the diet can influence hormones, which can then influence acne.
  6. Cut out the sugar and refined starches. Sugar and starches also change your body’s hormonal balance. As blood sugar rises, so does insulin, which can upset your body’s overall hormonal balance.
  7. Detoxify. While detoxification may initially result in a little increase in acne, in the long-term your skin will be much clearer. Everyone needs to detoxify because our environments are filled with chemicals that gunk up the body.
  8. Drink plenty of pure water. Water helps flush chemicals from the body and cleanses skin from the inside out.
  9. Relieve stress and get some exercise. I’m a big fan of yoga, which accomplishes both of these goals in a single activity.
  10. Dry brush a few times per week to promote detoxification.
  11. Exfoliate. This removes dry skin that can clog pores.
  12. Be nice to yourself. Seriously! If you say negative things to yourself I do believe it can manifest in physical ways…including possibly acne. When you look in the mirror affirm how grateful you are for your healthy, strong body, instead of saying something negative. When you love yourself, everything truly does start to get better, in all areas.

I understand the desire for clear, acne-free skin. Believe me, I know how much it can affect your life when annoying zits come up. But I urge you to get the root cause and follow the recommendations I list above about changing your lifestyle, and especially foods to definitely avoid.

Don’t go for Accutane and other scary popular acne treatments. Your health matters and these treatments can do serious damage for the long run. What good is clear skin if you are sick or internally imbalanced? That’s why I recommend natural acne-reduction methods that are far safer and much more effective than commercial acne products – without the scary side effects.

5 Frequently Asked Questions About Drinking Water!

Yes, we all know drinking water is good for us. Drinking water seems simple enough, but with all of the different choices, it seems to be actually complex these days. Here, I’ll answer some frequent questions I get about water!

Can I drink bottled water?

bottled waterThere are all kinds of problems with bottled water – both from a health and an environmental standpoint. Here are a few of the problems.

  • Quality: It’s difficult to know what you’re getting with bottled water. Some comes from municipal water sources – in other words, it’s tap water. Other brands may contain fluoride, which some believe to be toxic to the body. Bottom line – you just don’t know what you’re getting with bottled water.
  • Packaging: While most plastic water bottles are recyclable, many people don’t bother to recycle them. One look at information on the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch and you’ll see why plastics are an environmental problem. Producing them is also an issue, since they are petrochemical products that pollute the environment during production.
  • Toxins: PET plastic water bottles may harbor toxins that are hormone disrupters. These toxins can leach into the water. Hard plastic bottles contain bisphenol-a, which is highly toxic, as well.

Instead: Consider a stainless steel water bottle, filled with water from a home filter for your best source of hydration.

What temperature should the water be when I drink it?

I get this question a lot. Here’s the info:

  • For pure hydration, there’s nothing better than room temperature water, which is more hydrating than cold water. Why? Because your body has to spend energy to bring cold water to an absorbable temperature, which results in water loss.
  • Cold water may cause the blood vessels around your stomach to shrink, slowing hydration.
  • When you drink cold beverages, they tend to solidify the fats from the foods we eat as they pass through our systems. This makes those fats much more difficult to digest, and it makes it difficult to remove unwanted fats from the body. Room temperature water and warm herbal teas, on the other hand, keep the fats as liquids, easing digestion and helping move them through our bodies. This not only helps digestion, but can also reduce the risk of clogged arteries.

Can I drink carbonated water?

carbonated waterYes, but in moderation. Better, not at all, but if you need those bubbles to kick a soda habit, then I’m all for it. Here’s the skinny on carbonated water.

  • Carbonated water contains high levels of carbon dioxide and carbonic acid. Because of this, it is more acidifying than pure water and may contribute to certain health problems.
  • Carbonated water may cause pressure in the kidneys, leading to more frequent urination. This can cause a diuretic effect that leads to dehydration.
  • Some evidence suggests carbonated water promotes the growth of kidney stones. If you suffer from this condition, you need to stay away from it altogether.
  • As with other acidic foods, carbonated water changes the body’s pH. In return, your body works to neutralize its pH to a less acidic level, often leaching calcium and other minerals from the bones to do so. This can lead to lowered bone density and osteoporosis.
  • Your kidneys are designed to digest pure water, not carbonated water. Drinking carbonated water makes your kidneys have to work harder.

The bottom line: Pure water is better at beautifying and better for your health. It cleanses your system, digests easily, and supports detoxification.

Why do I need to avoid drinking water with meals?

I recommend that you drink water 30 minutes before a meal or 60 minutes after, but not during a meal (other than a few sips as needed.) This is because water dilutes your digestive juices, rendering the process less efficient. If you must drink a little while eating (or ate something super spicy!) sip no more than 1 cup of water during meals.

Do I really need to drink eight 8 oz. glasses of pure water each day?

You don’t necessarily need to drink a set number of glasses of water each day. If you are eating an excellent diet, the foods you eat contain plenty of water, particularly if you have a Green Drink each day or you eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink. By then, you are already pretty dehydrated. Hydrate well between meals. Customize the levels of water you need based on your climate, activity levels and overall diet.

Delicious and Beautifying Summer Drink Recipes!

During the summer, it’s especially important to stay hydrated for optimal health and beauty. Your body will crave more fluids as you are naturally perspiring more. Sometimes I feel like a camel in the summer, and just guzzle away many times more the amount of fluids than I do in the winter.

While pure water is always best, sometimes you want a little flavor in your refreshment. Unfortunately, many popular summer drinks are filled with sugar and chemicals that do you no favors in terms of your health or hydration. But there are many other good choices, and you can enjoy a refreshing summer beverage without all of the chemicals and sugar. Here are five of my favorites.

Cucumber Water

cucumber waterIf you follow the Beauty Detox program, you religiously start each morning with hot water with lemon, and perhaps drink more lemon water throughout the day. This is a different twist on our daily citrus-flavored water. Cucumber is a powerful beauty food, and this refreshing beverage infuses water with the flavor of cucumber. Cucumbers are high in vitamins A, C, and B6, as well as folic acid. Best, the drink is super easy to make and really delicious!

  • 1 medium cucumber, cleaned and cut into ½ inch slices
  • 2 quarts of pure water

Combine cucumber and water in a large pitcher and allow to sit for one hour or longer. Serve cool.

Aqua Fresca

Aqua FrescaThis popular Mexican drink infuses water with your favorite fresh fruit.

  • 4 cups pure, cold water
  • 2 cups of your favorite fresh fruit (I like berries or papaya)
  • Stevia to taste
  • 2 teaspoons of fresh squeezed lime juice
  • Lime wedges
  1. Place fruit and water in a blender and puree.
  2. Place a small sieve over a pitcher and pour mixture into it, straining the liquid into the pitcher. Discard solids.
  3. Add lime juice and stevia.
  4. Garnish with lime wedges.

Iced Rooibos Mint Tea

iced mint teaRooibos tea is high in antioxidants and flavonoids, so it promotes youthfulness and great skin. Over a little ice with mint and lemon, it’s a refreshing and detoxifying summer beverage.

  • 6 Rooibos tea bags
  • One lemon, sliced
  • Several leaves of fresh mint
  • Stevia to taste
  • 1 gallon of boiling water

Pour water over lemon, teabags and mint leaves and steep, stirring occasionally, until liquid cools. Remove tea bags, pour into a pitcher, and refrigerate. Serve cool or over a little bit of ice.

Basil Lemonade

 Basil LemonadeLemons are high in vitamin C and promote alkalinity and cleansing in the body. The basil adds a refreshing flavor to this sugar-free lemonade.

  • ½ cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 4 cups of cold water
  • 1 cup of fresh basil leaves
  • Stevia to taste

Place basil in the bottom of a pitcher and muddle it by slightly crushing the leaves. Combine lemon juice and water and pour over basil leaves. Add stevia to taste. Chill, and serve over ice.

Cilantro and Jalapeno Limeade

Cilantro and Jalapeno LimeadeCilantro is loaded with antioxidants and aids in detoxification, while jalapeno can help rev up your metabolism. Lime is high in Vitamin C.

  • 4-1/2 cups of water
  • 1 cup organic cilantro, washed and chopped
  • 2 large jalapenos, seeds and ribs removed and chopped
  • 1-1/2 cups of fresh lime juice
  • Stevia to taste
  • Lime slices for garnish

Pour water over cilantro and jalapenos. Steep for 30 minutes at room temperature, and then cover and chill for 3-4 hours. Strain the mixture into a pitcher and stir in lime juice. Add stevia to taste. Serve over ice garnished with lime slices.

Summer Hydration Tips

Staying hydrated is essential, especially in the summer. Water helps flush toxins out of your body. Your best bet is to drink pure water at room temperature, especially after periods of activity. Other tips:

  • Drink 30 minutes before or 60 minutes after you eat so you don’t dilute your gastric juices necessary for food digestion.
  • Avoid electrolyte replacement beverages, soft drinks, and other sugary drinks filled with chemicals. Just avoid them all.
  • When you are active, be sure to take plenty of pure water with you.
  • Drink mostly water, and have special drinks like those listed above occasionally when you feel that you need something with some flavor. Coconut water is also a good option.
  • The Institute of Medicine suggests letting thirst be your guide to summer hydration. There’s no need to force beverages.
  • How can you tell if you are dehydrated? Along with thirst, urine color may be a good indicator you need more water. If your pee is amber colored, you get thy water glass to thine lips!
  • Alcoholic, sugary, and caffeinated beverages dehydrate you, which is another reason water is best.
